Plants are mostly green because of a pigment called chlorophyll. Chlorophyll is extremely important for photosynthesis, the process by which plants convert sunlight into energy. Chlorophyll is green because it absorbs red and blue wavelengths of light, while reflecting green light. This is why plants appear green to our eyes. Additionally, green is an ideal color for plants as it allows them to effectively absorb the light they need for photosynthesis. Other pigments in plants, such as carotenoids and anthocyanins, may also influence the color of plants to some extent, but chlorophyll is the primary pigment responsible for their green color.
