Fish breathe underwater using a special organ called gills. Gills are made up of thin filaments that are rich in blood vessels. As water passes over the gills, oxygen from the water is absorbed into the blood vessels and carbon dioxide is released into the water. This process is known as respiration. Fish take in water through their mouths and force it over their gills by opening and closing their mouths or by pumping water through their gill slits. This allows them to extract oxygen from the water and expel carbon dioxide, enabling them to breathe underwater.
